Science
Science forms part of the core curriculum to the end of the Fifth Form and some 120 Science A levels are taken each year, often with Mathematics but increasingly with a language or humanity. The majority of students go on to take Science, Engineering and Medical degrees at good universities. The three disciplines - Biology, Chemistry, and Physics - are taught by specialist members of staff, each discipline having its own Head of Department. The teaching facilities of the Science departments comprise fifteen full-size laboratories, a project laboratory, a computer centre and a lecture theatre. The department’s equipment and laboratories, which are of a very high standard, are maintained and serviced by six technicians.
Boys in the Junior School follow an Integrated Science course, with one teacher, taking into account much of the background work needed for IGCSE. From the Second Form the three sciences are taught separately by specialist teachers. In the IGCSE years, the Edexcel IGCSE specification is followed in all three sciences. A few pupils opt for the Double Award Science examination offered by Edexcel if they do not wish to take Biology, Chemistry and Physics as three separate IGCSE subjects. The decision is made in the Fifth Form.
