CHARITABLE GIVING TO THE SCHOOL’S SPONSORED SCHOLARSHIP CAMPAIGN
The Scholarship Campaign
City of London School occupies a privileged position at the heart of the Square Mile, one of the wealthiest areas in the world. However, within two or three miles live some of the most financially deprived people in Europe.
David Levin launched the Sponsored Scholarship Campaign in November 2000 to allow boys from financially disadvantaged backgrounds to attend the School on means-tested scholarships. The first boys entered in September 2001 and, eleven intakes later, 162 boys have entered the School on means-tested scholarships which have covered all of their school tuition fees. This has been made possible by very generous sponsorship, which is all match-funded by the City of London Corporation pound for pound. The School is delighted with the rich contribution sponsored scholarship boys are making to the life of the community with exemplary behaviour, academic achievement and successful participation in sport, music and extra-curricular life. For example, Michael Akinfala from Peckham, studying medicine at St. George’s Medical School, whose brother Sam followed him through the school and went on to read engineering at Oxford University. Other boys include Ruhul Amin from Tower Hamlets, who is reading Engineering and Computing Science at Oxford University, Archy Bates, who is reading English with Russian at Oxford University and Alex Figurski, who is reading PPE at Oxford University. All of these boys completed means-tested scholarships at City of London School.
This has been made possible by the tremendous financial success of the campaign. However, further funds need to be raised in order to continue to allow boys from financially disadvantaged backgrounds to attend the School.
Charitable Giving to Support the Sponsored Scholarship Campaign
There are a number of ways in which you can support the Scholarship Campaign.
1. You may consider supporting the City of London School Bursary Trust’s Gala Dinner on 14 June 2012
2. You may consider sponsoring a boy throughout his school life
3. Parents of existing pupils may consider joining the CLS Parents Bursary Scheme
4. Former pupils may consider joining the Asquith Bursary Scheme run by the John Carpenter Club.
Whichever way you choose to support the campaign your donation will be matched pound for pound by the City of London Corporation.
City of London School Bursary Trust
This Trust provides financial support to boys who have gained admission to the school but whose parents cannot afford the fees.
Every two years the Trust holds a Gala Dinner at Tate Modern to raise funds for the Sponsored Scholarship Campaign. There have been four such dinners since 2004, contributing to 162 pupils entering the School on means-tested bursaries. The next Gala Dinner will be held on Thursday 14 June 2012. Guest speakers provide entertainment on the evening, contributing to its success.

Sponsoring a Pupil Throughout his School Life.
A wide variety of sponsors have generously supported boys throughout their life at the School. These included companies, banks, charitable foundations, former pupils, parents of existing or former pupils, and livery companies.
A sponsor commits to fund half of a boy’s tuition fees throughout his time at the School. This can be for a period of either seven years – for those joining at age 11 – or for a period of two years for those joining the Sixth Form. The other half of the tuition fees will be paid by the City of London Corporation as matched funding.
If you are interested in sponsoring a pupil throughout his school life please contact either David Levin (Headmaster) – headmaster@clsb.org.uk 020 7489 4701 or Phillip Everett (Director of Finance) – phillip.everett@clsb.org 020 7489 4704.
City of London School Parents Bursary Scheme
The Scheme was set up seven years ago with the aim of asking parents to donate relatively small amounts on a termly basis. It has provided funds to enable five pupils to attend the School. The Scheme is co-ordinated by a Committee which has representatives from each year group. Further information is available on the Scheme website www.parentsbursary.org.uk.
Asquith Bursary Scheme
The Scheme was set up by the John Carpenter Club nine years ago with the aim of raising small sums of money from former pupils through monthly direct debit payments. It has provided funds to enable three pupils to attend the School. Further information is available on the Club website at http://www.jcc.org.uk/About-the-JCC/Asquith-City-Bursary-Scheme.aspx
Whichever method you choose many thanks indeed for supporting the School’s Sponsored Scholarship Campaign!
