COMMUNITY LINKS AND OUTREACH
As a well-respected independent school City of London School works hard to serve its wider community. City does not have charitable status, but does have a long tradition of outreach and strong links beyond the school gates.
The teacher-led outreach programme currently has the a senior PE and Games master on secondment to the Olympic Boroughs providing handball and water polo tuition. Until recently another colleague was on secondment to a collection of East London secondary schools where he delivered a mathematics programme.
A science teacher visited several primary schools in Tower Hamlets, Southwark, Lambeth and Islington and assisted some of them in their science teaching programme. Their SATs results in science have improved. Several workshops were also organised at City to provide refreshment, encouragement and confidence to the classroom teachers who were not science specialists.
Three science teachers and one English teacher are providing Gifted and Talented tuition at Stepney Green Boys’ School, or in some cases at City of London School itself.
Two teachers have organised drama workshops for Hermitage and Schapla Primary Schools in Tower Hamlets.
The Combined Cadet Force has partnered St. Thomas the Apostle School, allowing thirty nine pupils to attend the weekly parades and the numerous Army camps. Currently seven have passed their Army Proficiency Certificate, and two went skiing to Bavaria in January. See the CCF page for further details of the training provided at City of London School.
The Square Mile Club is a programme of lunch-time guest speakers which operates three or four times a term. Five inner-city maintained secondary schools and our sister school are invited to attend. There is a separate page of the website which is devoted to this club. Follow the left-hand menu to the Extra-Curricular section.
The School site is frequently hired during holidays by theatre groups and musicians who need a central London rehearsal space. The premises are otherwise closed to the general public.
