City of London School Organ

The first recorded organ was built by Father Willis and was installed when the Great Hall was first built for the old building in Blackfriars in 1888.  However, it was too small for the Hall and was replaced in 1969 by a much larger instrument built by J W Walker & Sons Ltd.  It was built without a case and installed behind an ornamental non-functional pipe façade.  The idea was that as the school was expanding, a new hall would be necessary so this way, the organ could be moved at a later date.

The new School opened on the current site in 1986 and the organ was moved, rebuilt, expanded and installed in a magnificent case which is a breathtaking centrepiece of the Great Hall.  It is used continually for assemblies, teaching, recitals and concerts.  Many outside organisations and individuals also use it and it is considered to be one of the finest instruments in London.

A detailed specification is available below. The gallery shows photographs of this and the two previous instruments, along with other background information. The second file below is a facsimile from the concert which celebrated the installation of the organ in the Old School buildings in 1969.
