MODERN LANGUAGES TRIPS

The Modern Languages Department offers a wide variety of opportunities for boys to visit some of the countries where the languages they study are spoken.

In the First Form we organise a trip in conjunction with the History department to Normandy, a report about which can be found in the page on History trips.  A further French trip follows in which Third and Fourth Form boys have the opportunity, usually at the end of the Summer Term, to spend a week in Le Mans in northern France.  A recent addition to our portfolio has been the day trip to Lille, for Fifth Formers, shortly before they sit their GCSE oral exams.  In the Junior Sixth the work experience trip to Tours is immensely popular, with almost all boys who study French taking up the opportunity to improve their language in a professional context at February half-term. In the Senior Sixth there is a Paris trip which runs over a weekend in February.

The German department organises a trip to the Rhineland Christmas markets in December in order to give the Second Form a taste of the language that they can take up the following year and an unforgettable experience.  Our long-standing connection with Hamburg provides us with both an exchange and, for the older boys, work experience during the February half-term.

The Spanish department organises home-stay visits to Granada and Valencia for the Fourth and Fifth Form boys and to Barcelona and Madrid for those in the Junior and Senior Sixth, all of which are accompanied by lessons at language schools and cultural visits.

The high cost of group travel has ruled out school trips to Russia in recent years but a number of Sixth Formers have been helped to arrange private visits to St Petersburg.

In any one year well over 150 boys participate in one or more of the above trips.  The feedback which we receive from pupils indicates that, for many, such trips are one of the highlights of their time at CLS.
