City of London School Model United Nations

At Model United Nations each pupil represents a different country while we debate a current topical issue. One country, supported by other allied countries, puts forward a resolution, expressing their concern about the issue at hand, and proposing solutions. This resolution is debated, with various countries speaking in favour or against, or asking questions about the resolution. A resolution is ultimately, perhaps following amendments, put to vote.At CLS we hold weekly MUN debates on Monday lunchtimes at 12.50pm in the Coulson Studio, and all are welcome. From time to time there are slightly longer practice sessions after school.

We attend conferences at other schools in London and the South East, most recently having taken twelve students to Reigate Grammar School’s conference. Each year we take a team of Sixth Formers to the MUN conference in South Africa, where we have an excellent prize-winning record, and from next year we hope to attend a second international conference.

The highlight of the year is CLSMUN, our own annual conference held in March. It takes place in March each year and attracts over 200 pupils from more than twenty different schools. The most recent conference proved very popular, and gave our more experienced MUN debaters some excellent chairing practice. We were very lucky to have a High Court Judge, Mr Justice Blake, as our keynote speaker, and he led a superb question and answer session on human rights issues. The topics debated ranged from piracy in the Gulf of Aden to the detention of prisoners without trial and international energy supply. We look forward to the next CLSMUN!
