Mathematics

Mathematics is a popular and successful subject at CLS. It is the most chosen A Level subject in the Sixth Form and results are excellent. If boys do not go on to study Mathematics at university, many will go on to choose subjects in which mathematics is a requirement, such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering and Economics amongst others.

Mathematics is a compulsory subject in the 4th and 5th Forms and all boys are entered for the IGCSE Mathematics examination. Nearly all the boys will gain a B or above, the majority gaining A or A*. To extend the top mathematics students we enter them for the Additional Mathematics exam as well, which introduces many A Level topics.

Boys are taught in mixed ability form groups for the first year and put into sets in the Second Form. Boys who find mathematics difficult are in smaller classes, and for those who enjoy mathematics and are good it, we stretch them by preparing them for the UK Mathematics Challenges and Olympiad competitions.

We have lunchtime clubs and enter mathematical competitions, such as the Hans Woyda, for interested boys. We have a team of well qualified, specialist mathematics teachers with a range of both youth and experience. See the clsmaths website for more information, teachers' contact details, results, interesting downloads and links.
