CLS boys celebrate a record 31 offers from Oxford and Cambridge universities.
by Miss N H Murphy, Director of Studies
This year’s application round to the prestigious Oxford and Cambridge universities is coming to a close and City of London School pupils have received more offers of places than ever before.
The offer letters for Oxford landed on doormats in the week before Christmas and the Cambridge letters arrived in the New Year. So far, and there are a handful of boys who have not yet heard, this year’s cohort has landed an impressive 31 offers. This is higher than our previous record of 28 two years ago and a considerable improvement on the long-term average of 20. We hope that this rising trend will continue in to the future and that the current Junior Sixth Form in particular will take inspiration from these results.
Mr Bracken, our Higher Education Liaison Officer, is the resident expert on UCAS applications of every sort and has expressed his pride in the achievements of our boys. He puts this year’s successes not just down to a strong GCSE and AS performance by the same cohort, but also down to sheer hard work and determination. He said, “Pupils have been rewarded for their wider reading and their demonstrable enthusiasm for the subject. What is more, early submission of UCAS forms in September has undoubtedly helped our boys to the top of the pile.”
Parents might be interested to know that a recent trend towards more offers from Cambridge and fewer from Oxford has reversed this year, with 18 from the latter and 13 from the former. Offers have been made for students in every faculty, from engineering to philosophy and from medicine to modern history. The hard work for these boys is not yet over, of course, because they now need to pass their A Levels with flying colours to make good on the offers. Most boys will need AAA* to take up their place this September.
The UCAS system continues for all Senior Sixth boys and offers have also been flooding in from other very reputable Russell Group and Premier League universities. The final reckoning is yet to be taken, but it seems likely that all applicants will be placed with one of their chosen universities this year.
