THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The Historical Society is a multi-faceted one:

Every Thursday lunchtime, the Junior and Senior Sixth Reading Groups meet, over sandwiches, to discuss a broad range of historical issues such as ‘Is counter-factualism a worthwhile pursuit?’ and ‘Do all political careers end in failure?’ I am always struck by the willingness of the boys to articulate their views and challenge assumptions.

A Junior History Club explores, on a weekly basis, issues such as the rise and fall of empires.

The Society organises a range of trips; recent ones include:

Theatre trips to: The Cherry Orchard, Ivanov, Burnt By the Sun

Churchill College Cambridge – Cold War Conference

Various lectures at Gresham College, British Academy, LSE

We also invite academics to speak at the school. Recent visitors include: Dr David Starkey, Sir Martin Gilbert, Professor Joanna Bourke, Dr Lawrence Goldman, Professor Jane Seaton and Professor David Reynolds

The Society has also published three journals including a wide range of articles and reviews written by boys.
