Fencing at City of London School

Fencing at CLS has a dedicated following from a core group of boys who start in the Third Form - and in some cases earlier - and continue with the sport right through to the Senior Sixth Form.  Loyalty is one of the strengths of the club. Another strength is the pleasure the boys derive from working to develop a range of highly specialised technical skills, of which they are justly proud. We fence on three afternoons a week, and we also run popular lunch-time club sessions three times a week.  Boys train hard, and take great pride in being selected for teams to compete against other schools in one-against-one matches or larger schools tournaments.  There are over fifty boys in the club.

Recently, an u17 and two u15 teams achieved excellent results (one silver and one bronze medal) in the Leon Paul Team Epee competition at KCS Wimbledon.  In the London Section competition, which is a qualification round for the national finals of the British Youth Championships, CLS boys won gold, silver and two bronzes in the u18 epee and silver and two bronzes in the u16 epee.  We also won gold in the Welsh Region u16 foil qualifying competition.  Individual results include: Christopher Sandford (school captain) who came 14th in the Bedford Open (i.e. Senior) Epee tournament and Jonathan May, a City of London Sixth Former, who competes regularly at international level.

Each year the club travels to the Public Schools Fencing Championships, the largest fencing event in the schools calendar.
