Classics Trips

The Classics Department believes that students gain much of educational value and a great deal of encouragement and inspiration for their studies by visiting some of the places they have heard and read about.

In particular, we arrange an annual trip for a group of younger boys to visit Hadrian’s Wall.  Here, they not only gain some insight into the life of Roman soldiers in Britain, but also have the opportunity of a thoroughly enjoyable and varied few days away from the city in the very different surroundings of rural Northumberland and Cumbria.  A boy’s account of such a trip is attached.

In alternate years, longer trips abroad are arranged, giving pupils of all ages the opportunity to visit countries with sites of Classical interest.  Recent trips have visited Turkey, Greece and Tunisia, and we visited Pompeii and Herculaneum in 2011.  An account of the most recent of these trips abroad is attached, again written by a younger boy.

What the pupils gain from their experiences can be seen in their own words:  their enthusiasm speaks for itself!
