Art Forum
In Spring Term, a group of sixth formers were proud to launch the Art Forum with their inaugural speaker, Annie Sherburne, the multi-facetted designer/artist. Annie has been a designer-maker for over 25 years, using mainly textiles, but also making jewellery, furniture, and ceramics, selling her work to the likes of fashion designer, Jean Muir.
Over her career, Annie has aimed to make her work as ecological and sustainable as possible. This means sourcing and using materials, dyes, resources that have the least negative impact on our environment. She also strongly believes in creating high quality items here in Britain, using skills, techniques and labour which are quickly being lost due to the globalisation of manufacturing.
Annie challenged the students in her first few questions, asking, ‘Is it art or design, or craft?’ and proved herself to be an excellent speaker, giving a passionate account of her high professional and ethical standards. The pupils appreciated her frank style and enjoyed questioning her on her moral stance and creative process. They responded to her energy and outlook and left for afternoon lessons with a creative buzz.
The Art Forum would like to thank Annie for giving up her time to come to CLS. If there are any other creative people who would like to discuss their work, please come along to one of our regular meetings.
